Kind of off-topic from your post but, Korean riots reminded me.

Back in 2005, I was in stationed in Korea. I was the driver for the Colonel who was the US Army Military Police Commander for Northern South Korea. In the summer of 2005 the US and South Korean governments were finalizing a deal with a bunch of farmers to buy their land around Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek. The plan was to buy the land to expand the camp. The problem was the governments were screwing the farmers on their land prices.

This led to a bunch of protests by the farmers and students.

The articles are a little misleading. The last day of the protests was not protesting, it was full on rioting. The Korean National Riot Police were fighting the farmers and students who were armed with bamboo sticks and stuff like that. The police had 5 foot long batons, riot shields, and body armor similar to what a baseball catcher would wear.

We, the Colonel, his Executive Officer, and I went down to Pyeongtaek to watch the protests. Watching protests was a huge part of the Colonel’s job, we went to a bunch of them. We were in civilians so we wouldn’t stick out super bad. I was wearing a brand new (literally brand new, I had just taken them out of the box that morning) pair of Adidas All Star’s, white with black stripes.

The protests started off totally normal all kinds of yelling from the protesters and riot police and not much more. Than one of the protester’s cut through the chain link fence surrounding the camp, when the police realized what happened they went ape shit. They formed a Greek phalanx and slowly walked in to crowd of protesters and beat the shit out of them with their batons. The police were dishing out a pretty good ass whipping but they were also getting a good ass whipping.

Korea in August is extremely hot and extremely humid, like I said the cops were in full on riot gear fighting the farmers. Between the heat and getting whacked with bamboo sticks the police were getting hurt and passing out pretty regularly.

There was an US Army medic there just to watch out for the cops. Me and her were just bullshitting watching the goings-on. When she noticed how many of the cops were getting fucked up she grabbed me to help her set up an impromptu first aid station in the shade of some trees, we were giving IV’s to the police, patching up cuts, stuff like that. After we would patch them up or give them Saline they would go right back into the fight. I think we treated most of them multiple times just because they were super out numbered.

As I was giving one of the cops an IV he asked me for a cigarette, “Tombay jusayo?” I had one so I gave it to him. Some of the other cops asked for some and I ended up giving away most of my cigarettes to the cops we were treating.

After a couple of hours everything calmed down and I noticed I had blood on my white shoes. I was super pissed. As I was standing there smoking my last cigarette staring at my ruined brand new shoes the first cop I gave a cigarette to came over with a few of the other cops and very respectfully gave me this banner.

I wish I could find a better picture of it but I can’t. I know it is impossible to see the whole thing but it says something to the effect of “Go home American capitalist pigs.”

It’s definitely one of my favorite Army souvenirs.

That concludes story time with Uncle blacktruck, now get off my lawn.
